The city of Berlin has been trying for a while now to finish the construction of its new airport. Yet, due to technical problems, the planners and builders have called off the opening day  for four times. The delays have been felt as embarrassing and expensive. The new Willy Brandt airport is suppose to be the one and only international airport in Berlin, replacing the two older ones – Tegel and Schoenefeld. They are both getting progressively overcrowded and need the space that Willy Brandt was thought to provide.

The long delay has turned Berliners from angry to amused. Germans call it a joke now, since the initial opening date was the end of 2011. Talks and discussion had introduced a second opening date for July 2012 and when that didn’t happen rumors suggested that the construction might take as long as 2015.

This situation has called for a change of management and the new airport project has its new CEO- Hartmut Mehdorn,70. Mr. Mehdorn is known for being tough and determined to bring the project to a successful end. The former CEO of the airport project, Rainer Schwarz, was fired in January right after the opening of Willy Brandt got delayed for a third time in less than a year.

With the ever increasing Berlin visitors and new residents numbers, the city is a need of a new more spacious and better technically equipped airport. Lets wish them luck!
